SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah – Police say the man who helped stop an attempted car jacking is reuniting with the 18-year-old who was yanked out of the vehicle by the would-be carjacker.
The dramatic incident happened Tuesday evening — approximately a block away from the South Salt Lake Police Department — when a man tried to steal a car that had children inside.
Joanna Kingston said she was doing everything she could to prevent the man from driving away with her siblings still inside. Another driver saw what was happening and jumped in to help.
Kingston said she was driving her little sisters and brother to a party when she saw a man in the road. She said she stopped and honked to try and get him to get out of the way, and that’s when the man turned toward them and tried to get into the vehicle.
She said she tried to lock the doors, but the man was too quick. The man then reportedly pulled Kingston from the car and got into the driver’s seat. The only thing she could think to do at that point, Kingston said, was to reach in and pull the keys from the ignition.
Brad Fritz was driving by in his truck at the time and saw what was happening. He pulled the truck in front of Kingston’s vehicle to stop the man from pulling away.
Fritz said he was not going to let the carjacking happen.
On Friday, Kingston and Fritz were able to properly meet for the first time.
Police arrested Christopher Median-Izarrara for investigation of aggravated robbery, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
