Chabad Community Center Upping Security Following California Tragedy

Apr 29, 2019, 1:58 PM | Updated: 2:00 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Jewish clergy on Monday said they are upping the security at the Chabad Community Center following the tragedy at a synagogue in California.

The community is also hosting an event  in memory of the woman killed during the attack in San Diego County that happened on the last day of Passover.

Three others were wounded in that attack, including a rabbi and an 8-year-old girl.

“We overcome tragedy and bigotry by adding love and acceptance,” said Rabbi Benny Zippel of the Chabad Community. “When things like this happen, it becomes that much more important for us all to reach out — even more than we did before — to our fellow person. Let them know how much we love and how much we care about them.”

The Chabad Community Center will be hosting an event called Light Up For Lori Kaye at 7 p.m. Friday. Zippel said they are working with the Salt Lake City Police Department to plan for extra security during the event.

Friday May 3rd at 7 pm the Chabad Community Center in Salt Lake will be holding an event called “Light up for Lori Kaye” whose life was lost during the tragedy in San Diego. Rabbi Zippel said they are working with the Salt Lake Police Department and plan for extra security at the event.

“We are strong. We are untied. Nobody will take us down,” Zippel said. “… The best way to overcome bigotry and tragedy is by taking it to heart — living Judaism with all our hearts.”

The United Jewish Federation of Utah also released a statement, saying they are ready to support those impacted by the shooting.

“We condemn and abhor all acts of violence but especially hatred based religion or race,” according to the statement. “We know that the San Diego Jewish community and especially those connected to the Chabad center will have challenging days ahead.”
