Officials Seek Public’s Help After Danger Cave Archaeological Site Burglarized

WENDOVER, Utah – Authorities are asking for the public’s help after thieves broke into one of “the most significant archaeological sites in North America,” removed all the artifacts and damaged the site, according to the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation.
The theft, which happened at Danger Cave State Park Heritage Site, occurred sometime after 4 p.m. on May 7 and before 9 a.m. May 11, according to a statement from Utah State Parks.
Ron Wood, site archaeologist and steward, discovered the theft on May 11 when he came to open the site for a public tour, officials said.
“The perpertrator(s) breached the gate and protected area located near Wendover and stole all contents,” according to the Utah State Parks statement, “including educational artifacts, lighting, and safety equipment.”

Danger Cave is known for having been occupied by humans going back at least 11,000 years, according to officials.
