Canyons School District Hosts Gang Awareness And Prevention Series

MIDVALE, Utah — There are 25 to 40 active gangs in the Salt Lake Valley, according to the Unified Police Department.
The Canyon School District, along with Midvale City paired up with the department for a gang awareness presentation series. District spokesperson Jeff Haney said the hope is to give parents tools to prevent their children from joining a gang.
“The aim here is to start the community talking about what they should be looking for,” Haney said. “If they are engaged in school, if they are suddenly truant or absent all the time. Really their attitude about being at home and with their friends that they’ve been hanging around.”
The presenter, a former gang member who is now with the Metro Gang Unit, provided those in the audience some insider info.

“He is taking all of that experience of what he has seen and experienced and bring it to parents,” Haney said. “He giving them a real good look at what they should be looking for to help their kids.”
The presentation series is sponsored by Canyons District, Midvale City, and Unified Police Department through a gang-prevention grant.
