One Killed, Two Injured in West Valley City Shooting

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – One woman was killed and two others were injured in a shooting late Saturday night.

West Valley City police said there were five people in a car heading north along 2700 West around midnight, when one of the people in the backseat fired several shots. Police said a 15-year-old boy in the backseat and the woman driving the car were each hit in the shoulder. A 34-year-old woman in the backseat was shot in the head.

Police said the teen and the shooter ran from the car. The teen ran to a gas station at 2700 West 3100 South for help. The woman driving the car kept going with the injured woman in the backseat to a place where they knew other people. There, police said, the driver got out and another man got in to drive the car. He drove back to 2700 West to find help and saw the police lights at the gas station where the teen had gone for help. He pulled into the gas station for help.

Police said first responders worked to save the woman in the backseat, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. She was later identified as Angela Montoya.

Around that same time, police said they got a 911 call from Jayson Chase at a convenience store at 3500 South 3200 West. They said he told them people were chasing him. They said Chase told them he had had a gun, but had dumped it at a construction site. They were not able to find a gun.

Police said Chase had been in the backseat of the car during the shooting. According to a probable-cause statement, when they took him to the police department for an interview, they said he became “cantankerous” and was “physically challenging” an officer. They said he told them he wanted an attorney. Police arrested Chase for investigation of aggravated murder as well as other charges.

Police are still trying to find the other woman who was shot in the shoulder.
