PAGE, Ariz. – A man drowned while trying to rescue a family dog that jumped off a houseboat at Lake Powell.
Officials with Glen Canyon National Recreation Area identified the man as 62-year-old David John from Greenville, Texas, on Friday.
Authorities said dispatch received a 911 call Thursday reporting a presumed drowning in Ice Cream Canyon, which is on the Utah side of the Utah-Arizona border at the reservoir.
Witnesses told police a houseboat had detached from its anchor and was drifting away from the shore. Officials said John appeared fatigued as he attempted to retrieve the vessel.
A family dog then jumped off the boat and John and the animal disappeared from view as he tried to save the dog.
Witnesses kayaked to John and began CPR after bringing him to shore.
Medical officials arrived on scene and were unable to revive John.
The incident is under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the National Park Service and the Kane County Medical Investigator.
