Never Forget: Events Honoring Patriot Day Happening Along Wasatch Front

Sep 11, 2019, 6:33 AM | Updated: 8:25 am

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Today we are honoring all those who lost their lives in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

A number of events are happening throughout the day to commemorate the fateful events that happened 18 years ago.

9/11 Airport Event

A moment of silence will be held at the Salt Lake International Airport at 6:46 a.m., followed by a remembrance event at 7 a.m. in the plaza of the new SLC Terminal. The program is organized by and for the construction team and will include the Marine Corps Color Guard, Heathen Highlander’s Bagpipers, and a performance of the national anthem.

South Jordan Sunrise Salute

Students at South Jordan Middle School, 10245 S. 2700 West, will gather around the American flag outside school at 7:30 a.m. to salute and pay tribute to the nation’s military and emergency service personnel. This Patriot Day observance will honor those who died or were injured in the terror attacks that happened before the students were born.

The school has invited local police, fire, first responders and members of the military to the event. There will be patriotic music from the choir, and the principal will speak on the freedoms Americans enjoy thanks to the sacrifices of others.

9/11 Ruck March

The Kaysville, Layton and Hill Air Force Base fire departments is holding its annual 9/11 Memorial Ruck March at the Utah State University Botanical Garden, 920 S. 50 West, Kaysville. The opening ceremony is at 8:20 a.m., and the ruck begins at 9 a.m.

The public is invited to participate in the 9.11-mile challenge. Fire department bunker gear or a 30-pound ruck is encouraged, but not mandatory.

The Healing Field

The Annual Utah Healing Field displays more than 3,000 flags to honor the victims of 9/11. The 18th Annual Utah Healing Field Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at the Sandy City Promenade, 10000 Centennial Parkway. Flags can be purchased at healingfield.org/utah. Proceeeds benefit Honor365, a nonprofit dedicated to serving military veterans and first responders.
