Police Looking For 3 Who Allegedly Carjacked Vehicle, Kidnapped Teenager

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Police are looking for three males who stole a car at gun point and drove off with a teenager still inside before eventually crashing into a fence.

The said the incident began at just before 11 p.m. Thursday in the area of 3630 South and 1365 West and ended in a Taylorsville neighborhood.

West Valley City police said a woman and her 16-year-old nephew were inside the vehicle when three armed males approached them and demanded they get out of the car.

The victim said the carjackers bashed her window out before driving away in the car — with her nephew still inside.

WVCPD Sgt. Robert Brinton said the woman contacted police, and a multi-agency search began.

Authorities were were able to locate the white Toyota Corolla a few miles away from where it was stolen, he said. Authorities spiked the car’s tires, but the alleged carjackers still attempted to flee from police.

“We spiked the tired to deflate them, so the vehicle couldn’t speed away,” Brinton said. “… As we did that, an individual inside the vehicle was either pushed or jumped out.”

The person who exited the car was the victim’s nephew. He suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. He was later released

Brinton said the car then crashed into private property and the three alleged carjackers fled on foot.

“Just a big mess here to clean up — that’s for sure,” said Gary Harshberger, whose fence was destroyed in the crash. “… Just one of those things that happens, and you hope it doesn’t happen again.”

Police are still searching for the three individuals. The only description currently available is that the three are males and are either teenagers or young adults.

The individuals could face charges including kidnapping, armed carjacking,  and fleeing from police. Brinton said the department is also investigating the possibility that the victims and the perpetrators knew each other.

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Valley City Police at 801-840-4000.
