MILLCREEK, Utah – Authorities arrested a man who is accused of assaulting a child before firing a gun at the child’s father.

Officers with the Unified Police Department responded to the call Sunday at approximately 3:10 p.m. in the area of 400 East and Doreen Street.

Police said Richard Lindem, 61, of Millcreek, became angry over the noise from children riding bikes. Lindem then allegedly punched one of the children — a 6-year-old boy — in the head multiple times. The boy’s father then confronted Lindem.

“(Lindem) pulled out a handgun and fired multiple rounds at that parent,” said UPD Det. Kevin Mallory. “(He) then fled into his house over here on Doreen Street.”

The parent was not hit.

Lindem barricaded himself inside, Mallory said.

“The vehicle he drives, that all the neighbors report that he drives, was parked in the driveway,” he said. “So we had a lot of good information that would suggest that he was in there.”

UPD called in a SWAT team, and authorities then spent time attempting to negotiate with Lindem. He eventually surrendered without further incident.

Mallory said no one was “significantly” hurt.

“We had time on our side to bring in the appropriate resources to make sure that this ended as peacefully as possible,” he said.

Authorities were unable to provide details on how the suspect assaulted the child.

Lindem was booked into jail on charges of child abuse, aggravated assault and felony discharge of a firearm, all of which are third-degree felonies. He was also book on a charge of reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor.
