PROVO, Utah – Officials with the Provo Police Department reminded residents to reduce the risk of post-holiday burglaries by taking care of boxes and wrapping paper from their holiday gifts.
“Burglars know that many households have new, and oftentimes expensive, items in their homes following the December holidays,” department officials said in a tweet on Thursday. “In too many cases, residents make it easy for burglars to figure out which homes to target by putting boxes that identify their new gifts in plain view with their other garbage.”
Police said to avoid leaving boxes for new electronics or other items in a driveway or visible location for several days before the next garbage pickup.
They said breaking down boxes and putting them in a recycling bin as close to pickup day is the safer option, or consider keeping them inside a garage or house until pickup.
Additionally, Provo police officers said some burglars will look inside garbage cans for evidence of holiday gifts.

Other police departments said to think about keeping the boxes for future shipping or safe transportation needs.
Anyone in Provo who sees anything suspicious or a burglary in progress was asked to call 911 or the department’s non-emergency number at 801-852-6210.
