Card Skimming Device Found At Logan Convenience Store

Dec 30, 2019, 3:00 PM | Updated: 9:37 pm

LOGAN, Utah – Officials with the Logan City Police Department are warning consumers after a card skimming device was found attached to a point-of-sale terminal at a local convenience store.

Police said the device was found on Dec. 23 and had been installed directly over an in-store terminal at Duke’s C-Store at 1905 South on U.S. Highway 89-91.

“(An I.T. technician) was checking the machine and noticed that something just looked odd or funny about it,” said Logan Assistant Police Chief Jeff Simmons. “Started taking apart the credit card machine and found that the faceplate had actually been removed and a false one had been put in its place.”

It was not clear how long the device was in place or if it was functional before its discovery, but officials urged anyone who shopped at the store over the last few weeks to review banking or credit card information for any suspicious charges.

If fraudulent activity is found, officials said to file a police report and cancel your cards. However, Simmons said it appears thieves would have had to physically retrieve the skimmer to access the information.

“We are hopeful of that, that there won’t be anybody that’s a victim of this. However, if there are, we certainly encourage them to come forward,” he said. “These are difficult crimes to solve, but we certainly encourage anyone to report that if they have something that just doesn’t look right.”

Consumers should be extremely vigilant when making purchases at any point-of-sale machines and Simmons said there are signs to tell if a machine has been tampered with.

“There are usually signs of obvious tampering,” he said. “For example, this particular device was taped on with two-sided tape, and that’s what drew the IT tech’s eyes to it in the first place. It just looked loose. It didn’t look well put together, the material didn’t quite match, the graphics didn’t quite line up. So these are all telltale signs that anyone can use.”

Police also said there is an active investigation regarding the skimming device. The co-owner of Duke’s C-Store said they have place tape over the seams on their machines so they can easily tell if any machines are tampered with in the future.

Tape has been added to the point-of-sale card reader where a card skimming device was found on Dec. 23.
