SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Severe weather knocked out power for thousands across the Wasatch Front while downed power lines forced crews to close both directions of Interstate 15 in Ogden.
Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Friday as a system moved across the Beehive State. Wind gusts reached above 40 mph in areas, with 61 mph gusts reported in Provo.
Rocky Mountain Power officials said around 8,000 people were without power across northern and central Utah due to multiple storm-related outages.
“We have crews in the area working diligently to restore service as quickly and safely as possible,” officials tweeted.
Near Ogden, downed power lines forced crews to close both directions of I-15.

Southbound traffic was forced to take Exit 344 while northbound traffic was diverted off the freeway at Exit 343.
The freeway was reopened after 9:30 p.m.
Southern Utah was also hit by high winds, with gusts of 55 mph reported in St. George and 54 mph in Cedar City.
In Hurricane, winds blew this resident’s trampoline onto her roof.
In Utah County, fire crews were battling the Elberta Fire, which was estimated to have burned over 500 acres.
Officials said teams were battling winds of up to 50 mph in the area.
