South Jordan Neighborhood Evacuated After SWAT Situation; Suspect In Custody

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – A South Jordan neighborhood and nearby businesses were evacuated early Friday morning after police say a man told them he had a bomb and police found a substance in his home.

The incident took place at a home near 3400 West and 10400 South, according to South Jordan Police Lt. Matt Pennington.

South Jordan police received reports last week of threatening text messages and calls about a mass shooting sent to a store in a nearby Walmart shopping center on the corner of Bangerter Highway and South Jordan Parkway, Pennington said. Police contacted the man who sent the threats and learned he owned several guns but was not allowed to, he said.

The suspect also reportedly made threats to the owner of a nearby Culver’s Restaurant and its employees.

“This individual would send some threatening messages referencing some mass shootings and different things,” Pennington said.

Police served a search warrant to take the guns at the man’s house on Thursday night, according to Pennington. The man fired some shots but no officers were hurt, Pennington said, and police took the man into custody without any injuries.

“The scary part was as soon as negotiators made contact with him, he immediately became adversarial and started firing rounds at officers,” he said.

The man also said he had a bomb, Pennington said. South Jordan police evacuated the houses around the man’s home due to a substance found there, as well as all the businesses in the Walmart shopping center as a precaution, while a bomb squad investigates the area, he said.

Nearby businesses were forced to shut their doors and turn away customers.

Body Works Chiropractic was one of several area businesses that had to evacuate.

“The officer just told me it may be a very powerful substance, so it could be a bad explosive and we don’t want anybody near it,” said Dr. Theron Hall.

Police arrested Ryan McManigal, 42. Authorities said he was the only one in the home.

McManigal is facing multiple misdemeanor and felony charges.

The evacuations are expected to stay in place throughout Friday.
