Utah Honors Fallen On 19th Anniversary Of 9/11 Attacks

Sep 11, 2020, 7:08 AM | Updated: 7:36 am

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The United States of America on Friday marked the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York City.

The first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 6:46 a.m. and was the start of 102 minutes that changed the country forever. The morning’s ceremony at the National Memorial will be different in 2020 due to the pandemic. Unlike tradion, relatives won’t be reading the names of the victims in person.

A separate 9/11 organization will read the names of those killed during a simultaneous ceremony nearby.

Twenty-seven firefighters died in the past year due to 9/11-related illness. Their names have been added to the memorial.

On Thursday, Gov. Gary Herbert authorized the lowering of the United States flags to half staff from sunrise to sunset at all state facilities.

In Utah, more than 3,000 flags are flying outside Sandy City Hall in honor of those who lost their lives as a result of the attack. The flags each include individual biographies of the victims.

Another field at Sandy City Hall honors the military and first responders from Utah who were killed since 9/11.

The annual ceremony at the Utah Healing Field was canceled because of the coronavirus, but the flags have still been placed.

In Provo, the dedication of Provo Fire Station 22 will include a 9/11 remembrance ceremony with the Honor Guard.

A public event in St. George is commemorating those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. It is also honoring today’s first responders. That ceremony will be at 5:30 p.m. at Historic Town Square.

Then at 6:30 p.m. in Riverton, there will be a patriotic car parade throughout the city to accommodate social distancing. Click here for more information.

There are also several events around the state to remember those who lost their lives.

The Kaysville, Layton and Hill Air Force Base Fire Departments are hosting their annual 9/11 Memorial Ruck March. It’s a 9.11-mile race, with participants encouraged to wear a 30-pound ruck. The opening ceremony begins at 8:20 a.m. at the Utah State University Botanical Center in Kaysville.

There was also a 9/11 remembrance event at the Salt Lake City International Airport, with a moment of silence at 6:46 a.m. – the time of the first plane crash into the North Tower.
