Safe In 60: How to Make A Winter Emergency Kit For Your Car

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Last week we talked about how to prepare your car to run better during the winter months. But what if you find yourself stranded, caught in a prolonged winter storm traffic jam, or even stuck in the snow?
Consider putting together a “winter supply tote” for your car. It can make all the difference.
Simply store it during the spring and summer months and put it back in your car for the winter.
Here are some things to have:
- A flashlight and road flares or reflective triangles
- A first-aid kit and a tool kit
- Warm gloves, boots and a blanket
- Tire chains and a tow rope
- A bag of sand for traction (in a pinch, you can also try using a floor mat)
- A small folding shovel or something to dig with if you get stuck
- Jumper cables
- Matches or something to start a fire
- Fire extinguisher — this should always be in your car
- A canned tire inflator, but still have a spare tire available
- Portable phone charger
- Windshield washer fluid
- Extra water and food
It may seem like a lot of stuff, but not only can it be a lifesaver, it can also provide some weight you might need for added traction.
Always keep your gas tank as full as possible. You may need to keep your engine running for an extended period to use the heater.
