SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Retiring longtime Utah Congressman Rob Bishop was hospitalized after experiencing a “very mild” stroke Monday night.

Bishop provided the news Wednesday afternoon on KSL Newsradio with Lee Lonsberry. He was in Washington, D.C. to vote on the Defense Authorization Bill.

“I was back here specifically for that. I’m very proud of that and I didn’t say this because unfortunately, I was in the hospital when that took place,” Bishop explained. “So, I had Monday night, the day before it (vote on the bill) happened. I had a very mild… I want to emphasize that it’s a mild, mild stroke. That is why I actually, right now, am still in the hospital waiting for them to finally release me.”

Bishop ended up missing the vote but said his recovery was going well.

“I’m feeling fine. It’s one of those things where I – the only symptom I had was loss of balance, dizziness and my right side is difficult to maneuver right now, but it is getting better and it will return again,” he said.

The congressman added, “But it was a stroke. And that’s what caused me to actually not be able to do the one thing I really wanted to do this session, was to make sure the final National Defense Authorization Act with which I’ve had a part to play and which my staff was working so hard to accomplish – some really good things for Hill Air Force Base, I’m just sorry I missed that last vote.”

Bishop was elected to Utah’s 1st Congressional District in 2002. He did not run for re-election last month. He is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee. He said, “I also want people to know that I’m very proud that the National Defense Authorization Act is going to go forward. It is extremely important to the defense of this country as well as to the furtherment of Hill Air Force Base in the state of Utah.”

The Act moves on to the Senate where, if it is approved, it goes before President Trump who has threatened to veto it.
