SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah ranks No. 8 in the United States when it comes to automobile thefts, according to a recent report.
A company called Car Insurance Comparison broke down the national statistics for auto thefts since 2014.
On average, nearly 7,500 cars are stolen each year. That adds up to nearly one car stolen every hour of every day.
The Honda Civic is still the most stolen car in the Beehive State, although it’s been dethroned nationally by the full-size Ford pickup as the most swiped vehicle.
The trend has been going down, though. Car thefts in Utah took a steep drop in 2018 and 2019 after seeing all-time highs in 2016 and 2017.
This is good news because there have been hundreds of thousands of people moving into the state, adding thousands of registered vehicles over that time frame.
There doesn’t appear to be any specific time of year where auto thefts are more prevalent. However, authorities have recommended not leaving idling cars unlocked during the cold months as it presents ample opportunities for thieves.
