WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democrats in Congress on Tuesday introduced legislation that would raise the minimum wage over the course of four years – up to $15 in 2021.
According to the Raise the Wage Act, the minimum wage would be raised from $7.25 to $9.50 per hour within the first year.
In the second year, the wage would increase to $12.50, and then to $14 the year after.
The resolution stipulates that for the years following, the minimum wage would be determined based on the increase in the median hourly wage of all employees.
The last time the government raised the federal minimum wage was in 2009, when it increased from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour.
