SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Getting a ride for a free COVID-19 vaccination won’t be a problem any longer after the Utah Transit Authority stepped up with free fares for people headed to their shot appointment.

The free rides are available on any UTA mode of transportation which includes TRAX, FrontRunner, S-Line, Bus, Ski bus, Paratransit, and PC-SLC Connect, according to a news release.

The program runs through June 30.

This is an important development as the state announced plans to offer the vaccine shot to any adult starting April 1.

The Utah Department of Health announced Tuesday that more than 900,000 people have been vaccinated.

“By providing transportation access to more people for free UTA is helping eliminate barriers for people who may not have other transportation options to get themselves to their vaccination appointments,” Megan Waters, UTA Community Engagement Manager said.

Water said this public transit plan will also free up parking spaces at mass vaccination sites.

The only requirement is riders must show proof of their vaccination appointment including notifications on a mobile device or printed documents. UTA will also accept a vaccination card that shows the appointment date.

The free fare is valid only on the date of the shot appointment.

“UTA will be part of getting people vaccinated as we serve the community by getting people to their appointments,” UTA Trustee Beth Holbrook said in the release.

You can find the best route by entering the vaccination site address into the Transit app or Google maps. Paratransit rides can be scheduled by calling 801-287-7433. UTA said riders should mention they are scheduling the ride for their scheduled vaccine shot.
