$120 Million Ogden-Weber State Transit Project Underway

OGDEN, Utah – Construction has started on the $120 million, 13-station Ogden and Weber State transit project.
Representatives from Utah Transit Authority, Ogden City, Weber State University, and McKay-Dee Hospital all turned shovels at Tuesday’s groundbreaking event.
The three-year-long project was designed to run electric buses from the Ogden Front-runner station through downtown, to Weber State University Campus, McKay-Dee Hospital, and other stops.

Once completed, riders will be able to catch the bus every 10-15 minutes on weekdays and 15-30 minutes on weekends.
UTA said fares will be free for three years.
“When I started this project 22 years ago, we were exploring running a gondola from downtown Ogden to Snowbasin Ski Resort,” said UTA Project Manager Hal Johnson. “As the years passed, we explored many ideas like streetcars or express buses, but the best option was always bus rapid transit.”
Bus rapid transit combines the capacity and speed of light rail with more affordable construction costs.
“The Bus Rapid Transit Line is a vital component to our transportation infrastructure that supports our growing community,” said Ogden City Mayor, Mike Caldwell. “Community connectivity will be greatly enhanced and development along the transportation corridor will benefit our residents for decades to come.”
