Censure Resolution Fails Against Sen. Romney After He Was Booed On Stage

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Sen. Mitt Romney took the stage to boos during Saturday’s Republican Convention in Utah. The move to censure Romney for voting to convict former President Trump in both of his impeachment trials was also defeated.

“You know me as a person who says what he thinks and I don’t hide the fact that I wasn’t a fan of our last president’s character issues,” said Romney.

The booing from the crowd only stopped when the party chair asked the crowd to show respect for Senator Romney.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine responded to the reception Mitt Romney received.

“I was appalled,” said Collins. “Mitt Romney is an outstanding senator who serves his state and our country well. We republicans need to remember that we are united by fundamental principles such as a belief in personal responsibility, individual freedom, opportunity, free markets, a strong national defense. Those are the principles that unite us. We are not a party that is led by just one person.”

Collins was one of seven republican senators who voted to convict President Trump at the conclusion of his second impeachment trial.

Despite the reaction from the crowd, a resolution to censure Mr. Romney failed during Saturday’s convention.

There were 711 votes in favor of censuring and 798 votes against.

The censure vote came because Romney voted to convict former President Trump in both of his impeachment trials.

Romney was the Republican nominee for president in 2012, losing the race to democrat Barack Obama.

Six years later, he was elected as Utah senator and has often been criticized by members of the Republican Party.

Saturday’s motion for censure came despite pleas from state party leaders for unity throughout the meeting.
