Troopers Remind Utahns To Secure Loads After Loose Tire Critically Injured Driver

SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities are reminding Utahns to make sure they secure their loads after a driver was critically injured when a tire came out of the bed of a truck, hitting a small car on northbound I-15.
The incident happened near Provo’s Center Street around 5 p.m. Wednesday. The person in the passenger seat of that car was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
We’ve seen devastating fatalities over the last few years, and it’s not just from blown tire debris — but ladders or even an air-conditioning unit that fell off trucks and trailers.
Saturday is “Secure Your Load Day,” and while it’s a simple statement, it can save a life because more than 100 people die as a result of debris on the roads each year.
Each year, 10,000 people are injured annually, and the Utah Highway Patrol responds to dozens of calls a day to clear off junk and other materials.
Tips For Tying Down Loads
- Tie-down a load with rope, netting, or straps
- Tie large objects directly to the vehicle or trailer
- Cover the entire load with a sturdy top or netting
- Don’t overload the vehicle
- Always double-check the load to make sure it is secure
Take the extra time — and that includes making sure you’ve got good tires, too.
