SLC Officers Find Barricaded Suspect Dead Inside Residence

SALT LAKE CITY — A man who barricaded himself for several hours inside an apartment in Salt Lake City and exchanged gunfire with officers has died, according to officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Police said they were investigating whether it was his gun shot or theirs that ended his life.
The incident began around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday after police received a call about a suicidal person in the area of 1660 West and 800 North.
“About an hour after the call came in, that person shot several rounds at our officers. We had at least one officer return fire, and then they had to take a defensive cover to protect themselves,” said Sgt. Keith Horrocks with the Salt Lake City Police Department
The incident then turned into a barricaded situation.

Social workers and negotiators were called out to try to speak with the suspect and bring about a peaceful surrender.
Horrocks said SWAT teams were also called out to the scene.
“Anytime that we have a critical incident like this, we do have a large response, and that may seem a bit shocking, but just remember that we bring in more officers so that we can slow the scene down,” he said.
Officers eventually made entry into the residence Tuesday afternoon where Horrocks said they found the barricaded man dead.
Redwood Road has been closed from 700 North to 1000 North while crews investigate the scene.
Horrocks said the investigation into will be handled by Protocol Team 4.
