Police investigating homicide in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — Officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department said they were investigating a deadly shooting and car crash that left one person dead in the Sugarhouse area.

The incident happened in the area of Wilmington Avenue and 600 East around 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police have spent several hours at the scene, conducting a thorough investigation, that neighbors said focused on a home and a separate scene, where a car crashed into a home.

“The matter is being treated as a homicide investigation,” said Sgt. Mark Wian, public information officer for the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Police haven’t released much information, only confirming that at least one person has died.

But Dennis Cavazos was home when a car plowed through his front yard, taking out a corner of his and the neighbor’s front porches.

“They took him out of the car, tried to revive him, but he was gone,” said Cavazos.

Cavazos said the victim was a young man.

“That’s not good,” he said. “It was traumatic because he laid right there. I think he was shot in the head.”

Another neighbor told KSL-TV they heard two shots and then the sound of tires screeching.

Cavazos thinks it all started down the street at a home on Wilmington Avenue.

“I believe that they shot him and then he tried to get away,” said Cavazos.

Detectives spent the day gathering evidence from the home, and neighbors said the homeowner was handcuffed.

Sadly, they saw this coming.

“The neighbor had a party and he’s a troublesome neighbor,” said Cavazos.

Multiple neighbors told KSL-TV they’ve had issues with the homeowner, although not to this extent.

As they grieve the life lost, they hope police can find those responsible.

“It’s just a shame that this kind of stuff has to happen,” said Cavazos. “I just wish that people that behave in a criminal way, that they could do something to stop them sooner.”

Police said they don’t believe there’s any danger or threat to the public.

Details on the suspect and the victim have not been released at this time.

Anyone with information on the incident has been asked to call police.
