Man arrested after shooting at officers on I-15 in Beaver County

BEAVER COUNTY, Utah — Three men were booked into jail after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement in Beaver County.

Interstate 15, just south of Cove Fort, was shut down for several hours Monday night. That’s mainly because one of the men was shooting at officers.

“We had multiple SWAT teams from different jurisdictions show up. There was well over a hundred officers that were there,” Beaver County Sheriff Cameron Noel. “It was pitch black out there and was a very tense situation. This individual was dangerous. I talked with an officer that had a shot fired at him.”

It all started when a Utah Highway Patrol trooper noticed a car speeding just after 5 p.m.

As the trooper tried to pull the car over, the driver sped away.

He eventually stopped at mile marker 122, which is about ten miles south of Cove Fort.

“The driver ended up stopping, but then the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot,” said Sgt. Cameron Roden with UHP.

The two other people in the car were arrested, but the driver was still out there somewhere.

As troopers began looking for him, he started shooting towards them.

“When somebody is shooting at you, it is going to be a very stressful and very scary situation,” said Roden.

That’s when backup was called.

Law enforcement officers from several agencies throughout Southern Utah, and some from Northern Utah, responded.

They formed a perimeter around where the man was hiding.

He could be seen from a police helicopter above.

I-15 was also shut down in both directions.

“We were able to not worry about our citizens traveling because this individual was shooting right towards the freeway,” said Noel.

About six to seven hours after the standoff started, the man gave up.

William J. Brooks was arrested and is now in the Beaver County Jail, facing several charges.

UHP officials said he has a long criminal history.

Fortunately, no officers were injured during the standoff.

By 2 a.m., this normally quiet part of Beaver County was quiet again.

“It was a pretty hectic night for little Beaver County,” said Sheriff Noel.
