Widow speaks out about construction accident that killed her husband

Nov 18, 2021, 8:50 PM

Salt Lake City — The widow of the construction worker killed in yesterday’s tragic incident at the Airport is speaking out for the first time.

Letha Hamilton says her husband looked forward to going to work every day, and that he was living his dream. “He loved it, he loved working with this company,” she said.

Andrew Hamilton was a traveling construction worker. “We traveled around for his work, we went everywhere together,” said Letha.

Letha says she supported her husband, and he made it his mission to make her dreams come true.

“I was told that I only had 5 years left because of my medical issues and my husband was trying to do the bucket list thing,” she said, “and he succeeded in so much of it.”

Letha says that’s what brought the couple to work at the Sale Lake City Airport’s construction project.

She says Andrew was the 46-year-old construction worker killed. She says he was doing maintenance on a large crusher machine when a latch malfunctioned.

“From the way I was told, it malfunctioned somehow and it swung back, pinned him, and crushed him in the crusher. Before the supervisor could get to him, he exhaled his last breath and the supervisor knew that it was too late,” she said.

“I never thought I would lose my best friend, my everything. He was everything to me,” she said.

In a statement yesterday, SoNev Construction expressed their condolences saying the accident occurred while maintenance was being performed on the construction equipment.

“SoNev Construction is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its valued employees. The accident occurred while maintenance was being performed on construction equipment on the Salt Lake City Airport campus. OSHA investigators and safety personnel from SoNev Construction and its management, along with Salt Lake City Airport personnel, have been on the scene and the incident is still under investigation. Our hearts go out to the employee’s family and to the other employees on site who witnessed this tragedy.”

According to an airport spokesperson, there are about 550 construction workers on the site.
