As omicron cases surge across Utah, universities are beginning to release protocols as they face the impact of the new highly transmissible variant.

The University of Utah released three rules

  1. Test weekly for COVID-19, even if asymptomatic
  2. Get vaccinated against COVID-19 and get a booster when eligible.
  3. If you test positive, or are unvaccinated and exposed to COVID-19, follow the 5-5-5 rule.

The U said in their release that testing is now easier than ever with eight self-serve locations where anyone with a u ID can get a asymptomatic testing kit and return it.

There are also staffed testing centers on campus for people experiencing symptoms. For those locations and procedures, find information here.

Free vaccinations and boosters are also available on campus.

An appointment can be scheduled through Student Health for a vaccination or students can receive them at one of the many public events on campus.

The 5-5-5 rule is explained as follows:

  • Isolate for five days.
  • Test again five days after the initial test.
  • Mask for five days when around others after the isolation period is over.

According to their release, this rule applies to anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 or are exposed to someone who has COVID-19. The 5-5-5 rule is designed to prevent the further spread of illness.

“University leadership is monitoring COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations on a daily basis. Along with public health and legislative partners, we will continue to evaluate our health and safety protocols throughout the semester. Things could change rapidly and should circumstances change we will take steps to protect the wellbeing of our campus community. We urge everyone to be patient and kind to each other during these times. The ultimate kindness is to protect each other by following COVID-19  protocols.”

Utah State University said they had 101 active COVID-19 cases in their campus community as of Jan. 6, 2022.

USU has partnered with Bear River Health Department to offer free COVID-19 vaccines on campus throughout the month. They will also be offering booster shots.

Clinics are available to students, employees, and eligible dependents 12 on Jan. 14 and Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Eccles Conference Center.

Those who get a booster including students and employees should update their vaccination record with Aggie Health.
