Low water levels lead to Lake Powell marina closure

KANE COUNTY, Utah — Because of unprecedented low water conditions, the Dangling Rope Marina will remain closed all year. The decision to shutter the facility in 2022 is in response to lowering lake levels.
Concessioner and park staff crew are in the process of removing marina components to ensure boats don’t become beached and inaccessible. With the marina offline, damaged or beyond life cycle components at the facility will be retired.

In the meantime, the National Park Service and Aramark will continue to study ways to provide mid-lake fuel service. Possible solutions are complicated by a variety of factors — declining lake levels, inherent challenges associated with the infrastructure needed to power and operate a fuel system, and operational considerations related to safety, staffing and resources.
Bringing back the Dangling Rope Marina is a high priority for the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Long-term solutions are being sought.
“Dangling Rope is part of the park’s comprehensive drought response efforts,” said superintendent William Shott. “We know Dangling Rope is important to our visitors and is also extremely important to the National Park Service and our operations.”
The Dangling Rope Marina has been the only place to obtain boat fuel between the Wahweap area in South Lake Powell and the Bullfrog area in North Lake Powell, a distance of approximately 100 miles. Boaters, thus, should plan ahead. Fuel will still be available at Antelope Point, Bullfrog Marinas and Wahweap.
