Police: Driver killed, another injured after stolen car crashes in Taylorsville

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — One man is dead and another was injured after police say a stolen vehicle crashed in Taylorsville.
Officials with the Taylorsville Police Department said the incident started in the area of 4200 South and Redwood Road around 11:48 p.m. Wednesday.
An officer checked the car’s license plate and found that the plate was reported stolen out of West Valley City while the car itself was reported stolen out of North Salt Lake.
Police say officers attempted to stop the car, but it fled. Officers did not initiate a pursuit and kept surveillance on the car before a Taylorsville officer successfully spiked the stolen car’s tires.
The car continued to flee but at slower speeds because of its damaged tires, and police maintained surveillance.
Authorities say the car drove around different neighborhoods before it entered northbound Atherton Drive near 4700 South.

Police say the car failed to negotiate a turn and crashed into a pole. The car’s occupants, two adult males, were taken to an area hospital for their injuries. The driver of the car died at the hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash, according to police.
He was identified Thursday afternoon as 40-year-old Jeremy Arthur Lettow.
Officers said there is a sharp curve in the road where the crash occurred, and it’s possible Lettow was unfamiliar with the area and that may have contributed to the crash.
While no officers were involved in an actual pursuit, authorities said the Critical Incident Team will investigate the crash. Police said officers with the Unified Police Department will handle the investigation.
