One critically injured in SLC auto-pedestrian crash

SALT LAKE CITY — Police say one person is in critical condition after being hit by a car on State Street near 1700 South.
Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Brent Weisberg said the victim was not in a crosswalk when they were struck around 9:00 p.m. Monday.
Based on the preliminary information, a car traveling south on State Street hit the man as he was crossing State Street against the traffic signal.
The driver of that vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Police said the driver remained on scene and was cooperating with officers. The crash is under investigation, and Weisberg said this was the city’s fourth crash team callout in five days.
“Most of the crashes have all been related to pedestrians attempting to cross the street,” Weisberg said. “So really, it’s encouraging drivers right now, motorists, anyone using our roadways to take that extra time to know your surroundings when using the roadways, especially if you are going to be crossing the street at night.”
Southbound State Street lanes reopened Tuesday morning.
On Monday, a 70-year-old woman died after being hit by a car while attempting to cross Foothill Drive near an Interstate 80 offramp.
SLCPD Sgt. Tim Stumm said the area where the woman was hit is poorly lit and she was not in a crosswalk. Monday’s crash was the seventh traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City this year.
