Man killed in Magna shooting identified; suspect still at large

MAGNA, Utah — Magna police released the name of the person killed in a shooting outside of an apartment complex in Magna.

Police said 20-year-old Fernando Ruesga of Magna died at the scene.

The incident happened in the Colony Farms area, near 7250 West and 2600 South, just before 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Not long before shots were fired, Jon Dorman was inside one of the apartments working. He looked out his window and saw two men facing each other in the parking lot. He said they had their fists raised, but he didn’t see them hit each other and didn’t take them seriously.

“But then, I see them sprint back to their cars,” he said.

Dorman said one man jumped in a car and the other grabbed a gun from a different car. He saw the man point the gun and fire off several shots as the other man tried to get away.

“Once I heard the gunshots, I’m like, yeah, these guys aren’t horsing around.”

Two women were also in the parking lot, according to Dorman, who saw one of them get out of her car and then get right back in when she realized what was happening.

Dorman says he saw the man with the gun jump in a car and take off east and then north toward state Route 201. He described the car as a silver four-door sedan, though police have not released a description of the suspect vehicle. When he knew the man was gone, Dorman says he ran down to the parking lot to make sure the women were okay and they called 911.

“Its tragic right. Prayers go out to the families affected. There were a lot of people affected by this, not just the one man who was killed.”

When police arrived on scene, they found the front end of the victim’s car up against the apartment building and Ruesga dead in the driver’s seat.

“We’ve canvassed the apartment complex just to make sure that there were no other injuries from anybody that might be inside an apartment or that was nearby. We’ve confirmed at this point there are no other victims; just the one male inside the vehicle,” said Det. Kevin Mallory with the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake.

The incident remains under investigation and police say the suspect is still at large.

“Nothing’s been conveyed to me that this was random, and so, I don’t believe that there is an immediate public safety risk,” Mallory said.
