Man arrested after crashing stolen car, injuring child in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — A 33-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after police say he crashed a stolen car in Salt Lake City, injuring a 9-year-old.
The incident began around 3 p.m. Tuesday when officers with the Liberty Bike Squad spotted the vehicle parked near Andrew Avenue and West Temple Street, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
“Officers watched the car and later saw a man and a woman walk up to the stolen car, which was green in color, and get inside,” stated a press release from the agency Tuesday afternoon.
Officers attempted to block the car from getting through, but police said the driver went around them and took off.
Police did not initiate a pursuit, but a description of the stolen car was put out over the radio for other officers to keep a lookout.

Sometime later, the green stolen car crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of 2100 South and West Temple Street.
“Witnesses saw the man and woman run away from the crash,” stated the release.
The woman was safely taken into custody nearby, according to police, while the man was found near Utopia Avenue and 2100 South.
Police said a 9-year-old child, who was a passenger in the white car, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police on Wednesday identified the man who was arrested as Anthony Wilkerson and said he was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop at the command of a police officer and other traffic-related offenses.
