Body of Utah teen recovered from Newcastle Reservoir

IRON COUNTY, Utah — Search and rescue crews have recovered the body of a 14-year-old boy who went under the water at Newcastle Reservoir on Saturday.
Officials with the Iron County Sheriff’s Office said the boy’s body was located at 4:45 a.m. Sunday by crews using underwater drones and sonar.
The search began after the boy fell into the water Saturday afternoon. Deputies said two brothers — a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old — were both in kayaks, not wearing life jackets and attempting to knock each other out of the kayaks.
“It was reported the 14-year-old didn’t know how to swim, and went under in about 10-12 feet of water,” Iron County officials said. “At the time 911 was notified, the 14-year-old had been under the water for approximately 10 minutes.”
Individuals began searching the water before helicopters from Intermountain Healthcare and Southern Utah University joined the search.
Additional dive teams were called out to the reservoir before the boy’s body was located Sunday morning.
Authorities did not release the boy’s name but said he is a resident of Beryl, Utah.
