Disney’s D23 Expo 2022 showcases upcoming Star Wars, Marvel, and original projects

ANAHEIM, California — From a galaxy far, far away to neighborhood superheroes, Disney’s D23 Expo 2022 gave fans a glimpse of what’s to come.

The multi-media conglomerate held the expo from Sept. 9 to the 11 in California, revealing some trailers fans known about but couldn’t; see quite yet and some new surprise announcements.

DISNEY ORIGINALS

Some of those surprises include new live-action adaptions of old classics, like The Little Mermaid and Snow White were teased along with projects connecting to the classics like Mufasa: The Lion King and Peter Pan & Wendy. 

Along with the animation classics, movie sequels to fan favorites were shown, like Hocus Pocus 2 and Disenchanted. 

But there are plenty of Disney+ shows also announced with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, The Muppets Mayhem, and American Born Chinese. On the sequel side, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder and Big Shot are getting second seasons.

And while Disney is more commonly known for telling their stories, they also have some documentaries planned, like Growing Up and Choir, as each series follows young adults in their lives.

MARVEL’S HEROES

Earth’s mightiest heroes are also returning with several new projects as Marvel’s Phase 4 is about to end with Phase 5 gearing up.

Attendees at the expo were treated to exclusive looks at Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the second season of Loki, both expected to release in 2023. Other 2023 projects include Ironheart, The Marvels, and Secret Invasion.

But if you can’t wait that long, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will hit theaters on Nov. 11 with a horror series, Werewolf by Night, that will stream on Disney+ on Oct. 7.

Other projects got updates like Armor Wars, Echo, and Daredevil: Born Again, but no release window quite yet. In 2024, Marvel is looking to release a new Fantastic Four movie, Captain America: New World Order, and Thunderbolts.

LUCASFILM ADVENTURES

While LucasFilm might be known for Star Wars, its other projects got some added details. The sequel to the 1988 film Willow, called Willow, got a trailer to get fantasy fans ready for its Nov 30 release.

Harrison Ford came on stage to talk about the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 project, saying that  “Indiana Jones movies are about fantasy and mystery, but they’re also about heart… I’m really, really happy that we have a really human story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick your [butt].” The new movie is set to release on June 30, 2023.

And when it comes to a galaxy far, far away, many upcoming projects are getting ready to release.  Andor released another trailer ahead of its Sept 21 release, along with the much anticipated third season of The Mandalorian trailer with a release window of 2023.

Other Star Wars projects got updates, like The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi, with release windows and trailers.
