SALT LAKE CITY — A man is in custody after Salt Lake City police and SWAT Team searched in response to a shooting and domestic violence argument near 600 North early Saturday morning.

The investigation began at approximately 3:24 a.m. when police received a call reporting at least one shot fired in the area of Dexter Street between 500 North and 600 North.

During the investigation, police discovered that two men had tried to kick in an apartment door and someone inside fought back. At one point during the fight, one suspect shot through an apartment window.

No one was hurt by the shooting.

Officers followed a blood trail from injuries in the initial fight to a nearby apartment in the same complex. They saw one suspect leave, and go back inside the apartment.

After multiple commands for those inside to safely exit the apartment, at approximately 4 a.m. a 31-year-old man surrendered and was taken into custody. He was related to the victim.

Officers said it appeared to be an ongoing domestic violence argument between the involved parties.

The search continued until approximately 7:19 a.m. when SLCPD SWAT officers finished searching the apartment without incident, but did not find the second suspect. Detectives have responded to the scene to help with the investigation, identify the second suspect and determine appropriate charges.

Police said the second suspect may have left the area before police arrived.

Road closures were in place during the investigation, but have now been lifted.

No further information on this case is being released at this time.
