UDOT crews working overnight to prepare roads for snowy morning commute

DAVIS COUNTY, Utah — The snow may have died down across some areas of northern Utah Monday night, but the Utah Department of Transportation is still hard at work and expects to keep crews on overnight to prep the roads for what could a snowy, icy morning commute Tuesday.

Andre Erebia, a transportation tech 3 lead for UDOT in Centerville, said they are keeping a skeleton crew on overnight to continue salting the roads. They spent Monday afternoon and evening fully staffed and plowing the highways and state routes for the evening commute.

While some crew members went home, others stayed on and loaded up on salt to spread out along Interstate 15, Legacy Parkway, and other state routes in Davis County.

Erebia said they will be monitoring for slick spots and paying extra attention to bridges and overpasses.

They expect to be fully staffed again at 4 a.m. Tuesday, just ahead of when drivers start heading to work.

“We’ll have fresher legs out when that time comes, and then we’ll definitely be tackling the roadways before the morning commute and make sure it’s not slick for everybody to get to and from [work],” Erebia said.

As people head out Tuesday morning, Erebia said to expect to see the big convoys of six plows across the highways. He urged drivers to stay behind them and do not pass. He also recommended people give themselves extra time, because even with the overnight pre-treating, it could still be icy and slow going.
