OGDEN CANYON, Utah – Crews recovered the body of an 80-year-old man Monday after he somehow wound up in the fast-moving waters of the Ogden River.
Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Jensen said family members actually spotted the man’s car as they headed down the canyon.
Further inspection of the area led to the discovery of some of the man’s personal belongings close to the riverbank.
After crews from multiple jurisdictions responded to the area, Jensen said one team found the man’s body against some brush along the riverbank about a mile downstream from his car.
The recovery operation was extremely technical and took more than two hours, according to deputies.
Jensen said the man was from the ‘upper valley,’ which he later clarified to mean in the area of Huntsville and Eden.
By late Monday, deputies had not disclosed the man’s identity, noting they were working to notify relatives.
Jensen said investigators were looking into the circumstance as an accidental death and he cautioned everyone heading into the canyon this time of year to be cautious around rivers due to runoff.
“It’s rocky and very swift,” Jensen said of the Ogden River. “It’s very dangerous and we don’t recommend anyone going even near the river because chances of surviving if you fall in are real slim.”
