MIDWAY, Utah – The Ice Castles in Midway will open on Friday, Jan. 10, despite above-average temperatures this winter.
Officials said ice artisans have spent the last month dripping, shaping and hand-placing icicles to build the castle, which is completely made of ice.
This will be the ninth season for the Midway castle and tickets will go on sale on Monday. The site opens on Jan. 10 at 6 p.m.
“The acre-sized interactive experience will feature frozen tunnels, fountains, slides and cascading towers of ice embedded with color-changing LED lights,” officials said in a press release Friday.
Ice Castles, which was founded by Utah resident Brent Christensen, has six locations across North America.
Each castle is around one acre in size and weighs over 25 million lbs.
Teams of 20-40 artisans work to construct the castles over a period of two months, using thousands of icicles that are harvested by hand.
Visitors are encouraged to dress warmly and wear boots; officials also recommended using a sled instead of a stroller for younger visitors.
Weekday general admission tickets start at $13.99 for ages 12-and-up.
