HOLLADAY, Utah – One person died after a rollover crash Wednesday morning.
The crash happened before 7 a.m. in the area of 5300 South and Holladay Boulevard.
Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray said the vehicle was traveling southbound on Holladay Boulevard at a high rate of speed. A witness reported the car veered and nearly struck another vehicle going the opposite direction. It then overcorrected, lost control and rolled, landing on its top.
The driver, identified as Sontiago Lobato, 22, of Taylorsville, was partially ejected in the crash. He was transported to the hospital where he later died, Gray said.
Authorities haven’t specified if Lobato was wearing a seat belt.
The crash happened about a block away from Cottonwood Elementary School.
“It’s sad that a young man lost his life at 22, but it would have been more tragic if it had happened around 7 – 8 o’clock when there were kids,” said Joshua Lindsay, who lives nearby. “Where that car rolled there would have been kids walking to school.”
Residents said speed is a major issue on the boulevard, and they’ve been trying to get the city to lower the speed limit or take steps to make the road safer.
“Putting extra safety measures in place may have prevented the accident,” Lindsay said. “Obviously there’s some self-accountability when you speed. But at the same time, if you can lower the speed in an area, maybe you would have been going 35 instead of 55.”
A portion of Holladay Boulevard was closed Wednesday as police investigated the scene. It was reopened several hours after the crash.
