TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – A driver who fled the scene where police had responded to a call of shots fired was shot and killed after a short pursuit.

Officers from the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake responded to the area 6200 South and 3200 West in Taylorsville after reports of gunfire.

The call came in around 3:20 a.m. Saturday.

When they arrived on the scene, officers observed a vehicle in the area they described as “suspicious.”

Officials said the driver fled the scene, going westbound on 6200 South. Police pursued the vehicle.

The driver struck a stop sign, and then fled on foot. Officers chased the man through the backyards of a nearby neighborhood.

Sgt. Melody Gray said the pursuit ended at an abandoned house at 6303 South Stokewater Drive (3225 West).

Details about what happened next were not released, but Gray said officers discharged their service weapons, resulting in the man’s death.

She said the number of officers who fired was under investigation.

Police later identified the man as 28-year-old Bryan Pena, of Salt Lake City. It was not known if Pena was connected to the original call of shots fired.

Detectives from the Salt Lake City Police Department were brought in to lead the investigation.
