LAYTON, Utah — The Layton Utah Temple groundbreaking for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints happened a week earlier than planned and with a smaller gathering due to COVID-19 concerns.
Officials broke ground in a small ceremony Saturday.
“Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints determined a traditional groundbreaking for the Layton Utah Temple, with invited guests, was not prudent,” read a statement from Irene Caso, spokesperson for the Church.
The groundbreaking was originally scheduled to take place Saturday, May 30.
Church leaders announced plans to build the temple on Saturday, April 1 during the Church’s last session of General Conference.
It was later announced the temple would be built on an 11.8-acre site at the corner of Oak Hills Drive and Rosewood Lane — located 16.5 miles north of the Bountiful Utah Temple, and just over 30 miles south of the Ogden Utah Temple.
The three-story, 87,000-square-foot structure marks the 19th temple to be constructed in the state of Utah.
Additional Utah temples have since been announced for Saratoga Springs, Tooele Valley and Washington County.
Officials said a video recording for the Layton Utah Temple groundbreaking would be made available to the public next week.
