WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – A teenage boy is in the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds following a shooting Monday morning, authorities said.
Police said they responded to a call of shots fired in the area of 3200 South and Decker Lake Boulevard.
A responding officer followed a vehicle speeding in the area of 3100 South and Redwood Road. The vehicle, a Lexus, had been reported stolen from West Valley City.
The Lexus pulled into the driveway of a business, found a teenage boy in the back seat who had been shot several times.
The 17-year-old had been shot in the chest multiple times and was transported to the hospital in critical condition, said Lt. Todd Gray with the West Valley City Police.
Officials several hours later said the juvenile was in stable condition.
Police said the teen was actually shot in Salt Lake City, and it appears the people in the vehicle were attempting to transport him to the hospital.
The incident could be gang related, investigators said.
“Individuals in that vehicle said that they were shot while they were in Glendale, and about that time we got calls come in of a scene where a gun recovered in the road and as well as some blood,” said Lt. Alma Sweeny with the Salt Lake City Police Department. “So we believe that those two are going to be tied, that this is going to be where the victim got shot.”
The victim is not cooperating with the investigation, police said.
The alleged shooter has not been detained, but police said they do not believe there’s a threat to the public.
Authorities detained three people. Their identities have not been released.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000.
