SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Last year brought some concerning statistics when it comes to injuries and deaths on Utah roads, but it also brought some encouraging numbers.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, although fewer drivers were on the road during the pandemic, there were still an alarming number of crashes – some of them fatal.
Here are the statistics:
- 269 motorcycle crashes
- 171 crashes where seat belts weren’t used
- 141 crashes involving pedestrians getting seriously injured
- 23 fatal crashes related to aggressive driving
Each of those is the highest number in 10 years.
There were also 75 fatal crashes where speed was a factor, which is up 12% over the 5-year average.
Not all the news is bad, though. Deaths related to drowsy driving were down 300%, and drunk driving deaths were down 31%. Teen driver deaths were down 17%, and overall teen deaths in crashes were down 26%.
