Police Investigating After Woman With Gunshot Wound Dies In I-80 Crash

SOUTH SALT LAKE – Westbound Interstate 80 was closed just before the State Street exit for several hours while authorities investigated a “suspicious death” and single-car crash, according to officials with the South Salt Lake Police Department.

Police said a 32-year-old woman died in a crash on the freeway early Saturday morning, and officers discovered she had suffered a gunshot wound prior to the crash.

Upon further investigation, police determined the shooting occurred at a Millcreek condo just off 700 East on Nibley View Court.

“So far, what we believe is that this was a domestic violence-related situation,” said Sgt. Melody Cutler with the Unified Police Department.

Around 3 a.m. Saturday, a neighbor on Nibley View Court said he heard yelling next door.

“There was an argument in the carport,” he said. “After a while, it sounded like they were inside of the car arguing because it was really muffled.”

The neighbor heard things eventually quiet down, but then shots rang out.

“It just kept going until there were the four shots,” he said. “I heard the gunshots and it has to have been a small caliber weapon because they weren’t very loud. It sounded like someone was banging on a door to get inside, then the vehicles both left.”

The neighbor said he had no idea someone was injured.

“We didn’t know that happened until this afternoon when we were all full of police in here,” he said.

The neighbor isn’t sure if more people were home late Thursday night, but he said the man involved in the argument moved in approximately two or three weeks ago. As for the victim, he’s only seen her two or three times in the area.

“This apparently is where she was shot because there was blood all over in here,” said the neighbor.

“We believe that’s where she was shot,” said Cutler. “From there, he drove away and got on the freeway where the crash occurred, and he ran from the scene and was taken into custody.”

Cutler said the suspect was found and arrested at a nearby church, but an exact location was not immediately provided.

The man and woman were in a relationship and had a history of domestic violence between the two of them, according to Cutler.

“Boyfriend and girlfriend,” she said.

The victim was later identified as 32-year-old Shandon Nicole Scott of Salt Lake City.

The Nibley View Court home was closed by order of the Salt Lake County Health Department. Police suspect meth was inside, but for now, the neighborhood is processing the life lost.

“The worst part of it is I can’t stop thinking that there was something more I could have done for her,” said the neighbor.

Police suspect the driver is also the shooter.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Unified Police Department.

On Sunday afternoon, the suspect was identified as 31-year-old Terence Trent Vos.

“He was taken to the prison on a parole violation,” said Cutler. “The charges in this case are pending.”
