Teen suffers life-threatening injuries in crash on northbound I-15

MURRAY, Utah — Three people were injured, one critically, after a three-car crash on Interstate 15 in Murray.
The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Officials with the Utah Highway Patrol said a blue Mazda 3 and a blue Honda Civic began slowing down at 5500 South due to traffic when a Mazda CX-5 rear-ended the Mazda 3.
“The impact caused the Mazda 3 to spin around in a counter clockwise motion and impact the rear of the Honda Civic,” read a press release from UHP.
The Mazda 3 came to a stop facing the opposite direction in lane four, while the Mazda CX-5 rested in lane two.
Troopers are investigating a crash with injuries at 5300 S I-15 northbound in Murray. The three right lanes are closed. Please slow down through the area and use alternate route if possible. More details will be released as they become available.

Inside the Mazda 3 were three passengers — all brothers.
The front passenger and driver sustained minor injuries, according to troopers, while the 15-year-old passenger, who was riding in the backseat, sustained life-threatening injuries.
The teen was transported to Intermountain Medical Center for treatment.
Troopers said no one else was injured in the crash.
The three right lanes on northbound I-15 were closed for several hours as a result of the crash.

The Utah Department of Transportation said all lanes reopened around 5:15 p.m.
“Distracted driving is being investigated as a possible cause for the crash,” concluded the press release.
