SLC replacing fireworks with laser shows for July holidays
SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City residents will get a different light display for their 4th of July and Pioneer Day weekends.
For the first time ever, the city will replace its highly-popular fireworks shows with laser light displays.
“Earlier this year our city council voted to shift our traditional display budget to an alternative event,” said Lynze Twede, event manager for Salt Lake City Public Lands.
After considering many options, the final decision was made on the laser light show to eliminate pollution and fire risks from a fireworks show.
The shows will last roughly 20 minutes and be choreographed to music. The first will be held at Jordan Park on Salt Lake City’s west side on July 2 and the second on July 23 at Liberty Park. Both are scheduled to start at dusk.
Utahns we talked to tell us they will miss the fireworks but believe it’s worth trying something new, especially considering the historic drought.
Fireworks are still legal in many areas across the state, and in Salt Lake City. For a list of restrictions, you can go to www.firemarshal.utah.gov.
