SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – South Jordan police say two kids caught on surveillance camera stealing guns from a Sportsman’s Warehouse story this past weekend are now in custody.

Officers confirmed that the 7th grader turned himself in Wednesday evening.

The 10th grader was taken into custody around noon.

Lt. Matt Pennington with the South Jordan Police Department says they had been talking to the 7th grader’s mother to get him into custody. That mother spoke with a family attorney before agreeing to hand him over to police.

“The threat to the public, we think at this point, is gone,” said Lt. Pennington. “However, we still have quite an investigation to do to figure out what were they doing with the guns, where did the guns go, where are they now? So that’s some of what’s currently happening as we speak.”

Investigators with the South Jordan Police Department posted photos of the teens to Facebook Wednesday morning asking for help from the public to identify them.

Police said the two took handguns and ammunition.

Thanks to the public, the teens were identified, though officials have not released the juveniles’ names.

Investigators said they found out the two attend the American International School of Utah in Murray. School officials were assisting the South Jordan and Murray Police Departments in the investigation.

The school was not on lockdown, but high school students were kept inside for lunch. Officials said the suspects did not go to school Wednesday. Police stressed there was no concern at the school at this time.

Officers were working to determine how the teens were able to walk out of the store with the weapons.

“Obviously it’s a concern anytime someone is stealing guns, but especially two juveniles,” said Lt. Matt Pennington with the South Jordan Police Department. “This day and age we just don’t know what the intent is, what their plans were. That’s why we put everything out this morning.”

South Jordan Police Department said the thefts happened Saturday around 6 p.m. Employees at Sportman’s Warehouse realized the handguns were missing Tuesday and reported it to police.

While police didn’t want to criticize the store – and said they were glad the chain reported the crime – they planned to follow up on Sportsman’s Warehouse processes to see how these teens got the guns and ammo.

“You know, anytime somebody can come in and go find a gun, conceals it, [and] leave without anybody knowing is concerning. It was during business hours. There were people shopping. There’s employees, so that is a concern of ours,” said Lt. Pennington.

A representative from Sportsman’s Warehouse said they were fully cooperating with police during the ongoing investigation.
