Boy’s scream scares would-be kidnapper, saves sister

POCATELLO, Idaho – Police in Pocatello, Idaho have been keeping a look out for an attempted kidnapping suspect after one family experienced a close call at a city park.

Nine-year-old Chadwick Shane was being called a hero for his quick actions that his parents said saved his younger sister from a would-be kidnapper last week. The family was at Raymond Park for a free school lunch summer program when the incident happened.

Shane said his mother told him to go check on his 3-year-old sister, Krista Steed.

“There was a guy, and I saw Krista,” Shane started. What happened next isn’t easy for him to talk about. “I just screamed as loud as I could, and then I got his attention, and he just dropped her, and then she came running to me.”

Shane said that close call frightened them both.

“My little sister came running up to me, and she was crying and screaming, and bawling,” Shane said.

The two siblings were at the park with their mother and two 4-year-old brothers. At the time, Shane’s stepfather Trent Steed was just arriving.

“I saw some guy run out of the park, jump in a truck and take off,” Steed recalled. “Around that time, my girlfriend called, ‘Someone tried to steal Krista!'”

Steed said a police officer soon responded and checked around the area, but found no one. Since then, he said his daughter is too scared to go back to that same park.

“She spent the whole night crying, telling us about the bad guy trying to take her,” Steed said. “We’ll be driving down the road, and she thinks she sees him.”

If nothing else, Steed said the experience taught his family something that he hopes other parents will consider:

“Even the blink of an eye is too much time to not look at your kid,” he said. “I would say every split-second you’re not watching the kids is a split-second you could lose them.”

Shane said he doesn’t like thinking about what happened, or talking about it. However, he said he does it for one reason.

“I just don’t want it to happen to other kids,” he said.
