SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Election officials said they were pleased with the turnout for the Utah primary election so far.
There was a steady stream Tuesday night of folks heading into the Trolley Square polling location in Salt Lake City, the busiest in Salt Lake County. Volunteers told KSL it was busier than expected.
As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, more than 2,000 people had voted in person in Salt Lake County.
Election officials said the high-profile U.S. Senate Republican primary and the ease of mail-in ballots were driving a bigger turnout than the 2016 primary.
Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen said her office mailed out almost 275,000 ballots, and so far they had received more than 40 percent of them. That’s about 110,000.
“It’s not too late if you have a vote by mail ballot and you didn’t mail it yesterday you can drop it in the vote center and also our drop boxes throughout the county until 8pm tonight,” she said.
This was the same in other counties as well.
With the high return rate of mail-in ballots, as well as absentee and early votes, state election officials expect to get a solid primary report when polls close at 8pm.
