The USDA issued a beef recall for products sold in Target, Sam's Club, and Safeway/Albertson's locations nationwide.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The USDA on Wednesday announced a beef recall due to a possible E. Coli contamination that is linked to more than a dozen illnesses and one death.

The Cargill Meat Solutions is recalling approximately 132,606 pounds of ground beef, according to the USDA media release. The products in question were shipped to Sams’ Club, Safeway/Albertson’s and Target locations nationwide.

A list of additional locations that sold the ground beef outside of Utah can be found here.

The beef items were produced and packaged June 21.

The full list of recalled products and their case code numbers can be found here. A PDF of the food labels can be found here.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service was made aware of an investigation of E. coli O26 illnesses on Aug. 16. The FSIS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined raw ground beef was the probable source.

According to the USDA media release, the investigation identified one death and 17 illnesses between July 5 – 25.

FSIS is concerned that some consumers may have frozen the affected beef. Those who purchased the recalled products at the above locations and frozen them are urged not to consume them.

Consumers are advised to safely prepare raw meat products and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

The USDA offers additional recommendations on how to safely prepare food here.
